Public services are critical in their operation and have struggled to function adequately, or in some cases at all, during the recent heatwaves in the UK. In a post-Covid world, it is critical that adequate heating and ventilation systems are in place in our public buildings to ensure that critical infrastructure, such as hospitals and schools, continue operating as normal in what is likely to be increasingly likely weather conditions. Furthermore, having seen the damaging effects caused during the Covid pandemic, and staff absence due to ill health, it is long overdue that we ensure that adequate ventilation systems are in place to reduce the risk of airborne illnesses. All new public buildings should be designed with modern climate control systems including both heating and cooling. All current public buildings should be retrofitted with the same.
